Richard’s role within Route1Print has grown alongside the company. His job is all about making sure we’re doing the best job we possibly can do, particularly when it comes to ensuring the quality of our products.
Tell us a little bit about what you do.
My role covers all aspects of compliance within the day to day operations of the factory, including Health & Safety, Environmental Compliance, and Quality Control. All three are very important to Route1Print, but my personal focus is on delivering the highest level of quality to our customers as possible. I am responsible for generating reports on current performance levels, investigating issues as they arise and working closely with all the different production streams to develop plans which will constantly push us towards excellence.
I’m also responsible for the maintenance of our ISO 9001 Quality Management System, our 14001 Environmental Management System and our FSC Chain of Custody System. In other words, I make sure that we comply with all the requirements of these internationally recognised standards, implementing improvements where required and preparing the business for External Audit from our certification bodies.
What does your typical day look like?
I start the day by generating reports on all the different areas within the business, showing the previous day’s performance and highlighting areas which we can improve on. I then bring this to the daily production meeting with all the Senior Management Team and we discuss any particular areas of concern from the previous 24 hours.
Throughout the day I will investigate issues as they arise with the aim being to identify the root cause of the problem, rather than just tackling the symptoms, and put in place lasting corrective actions. The ultimate goal, of course, it to remove all defects from Route1Print’s production process and achieving a 100% satisfaction rate with our customers. In the nearly two years that I’ve been in this role we have made huge strides in that direction and I hope to continue improving for a long time to come.
How many years have you been working in the Print industry?
I have been working in the Print Industry for only four years, all of which has been with Route1Print. I initially joined the company as part of a graduate recruitment scheme in the role of a Production Planner. As the company continued to grow, there became a need for someone to specifically look into quality control as their job. The role was created and I have taken it from there to cover all aspects of compliance. It’s something that I’ve had to develop on my own and Route1Print have supported me a lot with in-house training as well as arranging for external training, the most recent examples being the RSPA Internal Auditors course and the IEMA Environmental Managers course.
What, in your opinion, makes Route1Print stand out from its competitors?
I think that Route1Print offer a fantastic service! With a 99.6% on time delivery rate, we provide a fast and efficient turnaround so that customers can receive their orders as soon as possible. I think our website is very user friendly and customers get a personalised service from our account managers.
It’s been very exciting for me to be around and witness the growth that Route1Print has experienced. We’re always investing in improving our efficiency and quality with the latest technology and this will then be passed on to our customers in the price.
