Black can look very different in print depending on the CMYK values used. This guide explains the difference between RGB and CMYK, and when to use rich black, standard black and registration black for the best printed result.
RGB vs CMYK: Why It Matters
RGB and CMYK are used for different purposes.
• RGB uses red, green and blue light. It is used for screens, including websites, phones and TVs.
• CMYK uses cyan, magenta, yellow and black ink. It is used for printed products, including flyers, business cards and banners.
RGB can display brighter colours than CMYK. When RGB artwork is converted for print, bright or highly saturated colours may appear softer or duller. For more predictable results, set up print artwork in CMYK.
Choosing the Right Black
Not all blacks print the same way. The best black depends on how it is used in your artwork.
Rich Black
Use rich black for large black backgrounds, solid panels and large graphic elements.
Rich black uses a mix of CMYK inks to create a deeper, denser black than black ink alone. It can give large black areas a more premium finish.
Do not use rich black for small text, thin lines or fine detail. Because it uses more than one ink, small registration differences can create coloured edges or a blurred appearance.
Black Text and Fine Lines
Use 100% K for small black text, thin lines and detailed artwork.
Using black ink only keeps type sharp and reduces the risk of colour fringing.
Registration Black
Do not use registration black (C:100 M:100 Y:100 K:100) in artwork. It is intended for printer’s marks and uses maximum ink coverage, which can cause drying and production issues.
