On the 23rd of July, the Prime Minister announced a reduction to the previously enforced 2-metre social distancing rule. Up until now, hairdressers, pubs, restaurants and other “close-contact” businesses have had to sit by and watch as other businesses have been able to re-open in the wake of England’s industry-wide enforced closures. With the new 1-meter-plus social distancing rule coming into effect on the 4th of July, this is set to change!
What Is the Governments New “1-metre-plus” Rule?
Existing 2-metre social distancing measures have been eased to a new 1-metre-plus rule in a bid to support the re-opening of some “close-contact” businesses. Simply put, the new guidance means that where it is not possible to remain 2-metres apart, people can instead get within 1-metre of each other while taking extra precautions to reduce transmission of the virus. A 2-metre distance is still preferred where possible.
This is great news for select, close-contact businesses that have now been given the go-ahead to re-open their doors to customers. Your clients must give serious consideration to how they are going to implement the new social distancing rules on their premises, keeping both their staff and customers safe.
How Should My Clients Implement the new “1-metre-plus” rule?
Implementing the new rules may vary depending on what industry your clients are in. We encourage you to have conversations with your clients around how they are going to be enforcing the new social distancing measures ensuring they have everything in their new customer journey covered. For example, a small hair salon might need to implement a queuing system outside of their shop if their premises aren’t quite big enough to hold clients at least a 1-metre-plus distance.
It is also important for your clients to consider how they are going to implement policies on social distancing and how they are going to communicate these to their customers.

What Industries Are Re-opening on the 4th of July and What Support Will They Need?
Pubs and Restaurants
The pressure is on for pubs and restaurants to re-open in a “COVID-secure” way. Health and hygiene posters and signage are strongly advised for clients in this sector communicating handwashing and ventilation instructions. To support with implementing the new 1-metre-plus social distancing rule, it is thought that table service apps are going to be prevalent in this industry, how to download / install the app and usage instructions will need printing to support clients that need to educate their customers on the new way of ordering their food and beverages. Theatres, concerts, museums and galleries
Although live performances and mass gatherings are not permitted as of yet, theatres, concerts, museums and galleries are set to re-open their doors implementing the new 1-metre-plus social distancing rules from the 4th July.
